What is the English cottage style?
The English cottage style refers to a type of interior and architectural design that is inspired by traditional rural cottages in England. It is characterized by a cozy, charming, and rustic aesthetic that often incorporates elements of nature and traditional craftsmanship.
Here are a few practical ways to incorporate the English Style into your home!
Stone
English cottages often feature a stone or brick exterior! However that isn’t very realistic for most of us so adding stone in our home as backsplash, on fireplaces or feature walls does the trick! It makes the house feel older than it actually is giving it that lived in old world cottage vibe.
Beams
Another very popular feature of the original English cottages are exposed wooden beams, and that usually with low ceilings! Even if you have lower ceilings this is absolutely possible and can transform any room, making it cozy and adding so much character!
Colour
The colour palette of English cottage style is usually soft and muted, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Earthy tones such as creams, beiges, soft greens, and pale blues are commonly used. Furniture
English cottages tend to have solid wooden tables, chairs and other pieces of furniture. Overstuffed sofas, upholstered arm chairs and vintage worn pieces contribure to a cozy and lived in feel. Consider thrifting some of furniture to achieve this!
Decor
Since a collection of antiques and acquiring over time is popular for English cottages, they can sometimes seem cluttered, but in the best way possible! Things like embroidery, rustic pottery, traditional ceramics, vintage accessories, a collection of books and china are all part of the English cottage decor.
Natural Elements
English cottage style celebrates natural elements like fresh flowers, potted plants, botanical prints, floral tablecloths or curtains. Natural lighting is maximized when possible and the outside is brought when possible.
Primitive Kitchens
English cottage kitchen tend to be on the primitive side, with flush cabinets or even cabinets without doors, lots of open shelving, displaying most kitchen accessories. Very often upper cabinets are left out, and a rustic table is used as an island. Dishes and canisters are often highlighted and usually practically set for everyday use.
