5 things I would do again when building

New house build

If you have ever build a home you probably have a list of things you would change if you were to build again. I have yet to meet someone who doesn’t!

That is why most people usually end up building at least twice. With the list of things that you would change fortunately also comes a list of things you are happy you did! I wanted to share “My top 5 things I don’t regret when building a home”with you today.

New house build

1. Arches

Arches are back in style in full force this past year. When we started building they were just starting to gain momentum. Fortunately I have always loved arches, even before they were a thing.

They add so much character and make the the house feel less brand new and more like an older European villa, and I am here for it!

Every walk through that doesn’t have a door in our home is an arch, and I haven’t regretted this one bit. They are very visually appealing and always bring me joy when looking at them! If we were to build again I would definitely do my best to implement arches again.

2. Brass/ Gold Faucets

This is also something that is widely on trend the past two years and I think it will stick for quite some time. However regardless of what is in style I have been loving the warm faucets and accents throughout the house.

I don’t think I will get tired of them anytime soon! Something I didn’t realize before we had them was how easy cleaning is. They don’t show any watermarks and always look clean. Win win!

3. No upper kitchen cabinets

I have always loved European style kitchens and lots of them don’t happen to have upper cabinets!

When designing our kitchen I really liked the idea of a more open feeling and I realized I don’t have to do upper cabinets. They are usually hard to reach anyways, and we have enough storage space so instead we opted for floating shelves beside the kitchen range hood. (Still to come) I don’t regret this whatsoever and would do it again!

4. Quartz Countertop

I have to say I’m very impressed with the quality of our quartz countertops! We decided to go with Calacatta Gold quartz for our whole kitchen. It has soft veining with tiny bit of gold mixed in which goes perfect with our warm accents.

It is scratch and stain resistant and I haven’t had any problems with it. I would choose the exact quartz again given the choice!

5. Wood burning fireplace

And last but not least a wood burning fireplace! This will cost you extra during the build but will be so worth it down the line. We live in Manitoba where we unfortunately have very cold winters!

Not only is it super cozy to sit by a warm fire but it also saves us a lot of money on our bills! If you are back and forth on this I say go for it, you won’t regret it.

A wood burning fireplace.
The fireplace will still be finished. Hopefully soon!

I hope this was helpful to you on your building or renovation journey. If it was I would love to hear from you!

Love,

Inez
