English garden

It is finally gardening weather here in Manitoba and that makes me dream and plan all things outdoor spaces, veggie gardens and garden designs! We started our landscaping the other day so first thing on our list is grass haha, but eventually I’m dreaming of a enchanting garden filled with blooms. That being said here are some popular garden designs that are popular right now and completely transform your space!

English cottage garden

My absolute favourite style: The English Cottage Garden. This design is known for its informal and romantic style. It typically features a mix of colorful flowers, herbs, and shrubs arranged in a seemingly haphazard but visually appealing manner. Pathways, picket fences, and climbing plants are often incorporated into the design.

Formal Gardens

Formal gardens are characterized by clean lines, symmetry, and a structured layout. They often include geometric patterns, well-manicured hedges, topiaries, and focal points such as fountains or statues. Boxwood and other neatly trimmed plants are commonly used in this design. They remind me of royalty and what I imagine every King and Queen has!

Zen Garden

Inspired by traditional Japanese gardens, Zen gardens aim to create a tranquil and meditative atmosphere. They often feature carefully raked gravel or sand to represent water, rocks, moss, and minimalist plantings. Zen gardens are designed to evoke a sense of calmness and simplicity

Mediterranean Garden

This design draws inspiration from the landscapes of Mediterranean regions, such as Italy, Greece, and Spain. It typically includes drought-tolerant plants like lavender, rosemary, and olive trees. The design often incorporates gravel or stone pathways, terracotta pots, and water features like fountains or small ponds.

Tropical Garden

Tropical gardens aim to recreate the lush and exotic feel of tropical regions. They often feature vibrant and bold foliage, colorful flowers, and large-leaved plants like palms, ferns, and banana trees. The use of water features, such as ponds or small waterfalls, can add to the tropical ambiance.

Contemporary Garden

Contemporary or modern garden designs emphasize clean lines, minimalism, and the use of modern materials. They often incorporate elements such as concrete, steel, and glass. Plants are selected for their structural qualities, and the overall design tends to be sleek and low-maintenance.

Wildlife friendly garden

These gardens focus on supporting local ecosystems and attracting wildlife. Native plants are chosen to provide food and shelter for birds, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. Wildlife-friendly gardens often include features like bird feeders, bee houses, and water sources to encourage biodiversity.

These are just a few examples of poplar styles of gardens! The right garden style for you will ultimately come down to your taste preference, your climate and space! My personal favourites are the English and Formal Gardens. Could be that I like all things English? If thats your style too then maybe this post on the English cottage style will interest you!

Maybe we can make that dream a reality one day but until then I will dream! Which is your favourite?

love,

Inez
