If you are staring at all the tasks at once then it can be overly overwhelming, and if you are like me you might just not even start. However the trick is to do one task at a time! One step at time, and before you know the journey is behind you.
Where to start to properly spring clean?
This question alone can be overwhelming when you are wanted to start to deep clean the house. Where do you even start. This might vary from person to person, however for me, I start with the most obvious, most needed tasks and I go from there. I make a list, and I start checking off the boxes one by one.
I cannot stress a list enough! Even if you aren’t a type A person, (hint: I’m not either) they can be majorly helpful. It helps you stay organized, and you get satisfaction when you completed a task and you can check that little box. It will motivate you to keep going! Entire home
Let’s start with tasks that aren’t specific to a room but that need attention none the less. Things like:
Windows
This is the only time in the year I wish I had less windows. This is one of those things that you notice how dirty they were once you have actually cleaned them. It’s hard work, but when they are all sparkling clean it is ever so gratisfying! For window tracks I use good old soap and water, and for the glass after washing any gum off I like to use a window cleaner and a simple microfibre cloth. A squeegee should also do the trick if you prefer to work with that.
Baseboards
Something that gets easily overlooked and is such a pesky job, but not overly hard. I just take a rag, spray some thieves cleaner (water and some lemon oil also does the trick) on it and wipe them down. Good music in the back round helps!!
Curtains and blinds
I’ll be honest, I don’t think I have ever in my life taken down my curtains and washed them. However, to my defence we have never really stayed long in one house either. Thinking about it now washing your curtains every now and then would be beneficial. They collect dust and if you have little ones even might be used as a napkin every now and then. Yikes! Blinds also collect dust and need to be wiped every so often.
Door tracks and vent covers
Another pesky job but oh so satisfying! A little tool that makes things super quick and helpful is this handheld steamer. It loosens any hardened dirt and kills all bacteria!
Wipe light fixtures
This is when pot lights come in handy, less light fixtures to clean! This task usually doesn’t take too long tho and is easy to do with a wet clean rag.
Kitchen
The heart of the home, the kitchen, that has oh so many corners that will collect dust and dirt if not cleaned regularly. This space has a few of my least favourite chores but since the kitchen is also where the food gets prepared it should be clean anyways. A few areas I focus on during spring cleaning in the kitchen are:
- Toss expired items
- Wipe cabinets + tops of cabinets
- Clean out cabinets and shelves
- Wipe down cupboard shelves and drawers
- Deep clean fridge and freezer
- Deep clean oven and microwave
- Deep clean dishwasher
- Wipe Backsplash
- Change vent hood filter
- Clean grout
This is a pretty good run down, if you have completed this list your kitchen should be sparkling!
Living room
One of my favourite spaces in the home and also the easiest to clean in opinion! The tasks I focus on in this room are:
- Declutter and dust decor
- Clean upholstered furniture
- Polish wooden furniture
- Wash throws and pillows
- Organize entertainment unit
Bathrooms
Deep cleaning bathrooms are not as complicated as one thinks. I focus on a few things here.
- Wiping disinfecting showers and bathtubs
- Cleaning shower head
- Organizing Cubboards
- Replacing shower curtian
- Wiping all surfaces
- Cleaning and disinfecting toilets
Viola! This shouldn’t take longer then a day and you will thank yourself later once our bathrooms are sparkly again!
Laundry
This is easily the messiest room in our house simply because of one reason. I despise laundry! I would rather clean the kitchen 10 times over. However it is a chore that is very necessary. Even tho the list isn’t huge there are still a few things you can’t forget to deep clean in this room.
- Clean washer inside and out
- .Wipe down dryer
- Clean dryer vent and filter
- Wash and organize laundry
- Vacuum behind washer and dryer
- Clean out and organize laundry supplies
Garage
Lastly, the garage. I’m happy to say this is usually my husbands responsibility because I have no oversight of the tools. The garage can look very different from person to person, depending on hobbies etc. A few things I would focus on here is organize and declutter! Making sure all things have a home. And if necessary cleaning the garage floor.
Things that are easily overlooked
Something you can’t forget is checking the battery life of your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms. Because those could be life saving!
I would also recommend looking and cleaning behind furniture. You might find a thing or two that were deemed long lost and cleaning the dust doesn’t hurt either!
Another thing that gets overlooked are rugs. I would recommend deep cleaning ever so often because they collect so much dirt without us actually seeing it. We own a lot of tumble and ruggable rugs and that makes it so easy because I simply throw them in the wash.
I wrote a review about our tumble rug here.
A few things to remember
Something I find super helpful is making sure everything and every item in your house has a home. A spot that is dedicated to that item! That will help keep things organized and in order. Read this post to learn a few hacks on out how to stay organized!
I know this seems like a long list, but don’t overwhelm yourself. Take it one day, one task at time. Ask your friend or family to help. Crank the music and just keep checking those boxes until it’s all completed. I know you can do it!
I hope this was helpful, if it was I’d love to hear from you! Have fun cleaning!
