How to find free vintage prints online
I find all the free vintage images you see on my website on the public domain. The public domain refers to images that do not have a copyright attached to them to it is legal to download, print, share or even sell them!
Yes you heard that right. You will find tons of these images across Etsy and other places for sale. You can find them for free, it just takes a bit of searching! My favourite websites I use to find these images are the following:
- Wikimedia Commons
- National Gallery of Art
- The New York Public Library
- Smithsonian
- Getty Museum Collection
- Art Institute Chicago
- Picryl
- YCBA
Simply enter keywords of what you are looking for and let the scrolling begin.
How to download your free prints
Before you download and resize your art I would suggest that you already have the frame which you will be using so you know which size you need. Sometimes the website gives you option which size you can download them in and sometimes there are only a few or one option. Simply click download on the preferred size.
Resizing and editing your images
If you need your image resized to fit your frame then don’t fret. It if fairy simple to do in an app called Canva. There is a free version and a paid version however the free version is enough to resize your image.
Take these steps to resize your image:
- I open the app and create a free account
- Now click “Create new design”
- Now select “custom size”
- Here you want to enter the size you need for your frame. For example “8×10 inches”
- Now upload the image and adjust the image to the blank page
- All that’s left to do is to save the image and viola, you just resized your image.

If you want to edit your image then there are also options to add filters, changing colouring, crop and cut within this app!
How to print your free art
OPTION #1
If your art is small enough(8Ă—10, 5Ă—7, 4Ă—6) then print your art at home! If you have a printer at home then this is the easiest option! I would use high quality stock paper or watercolour paperfor vintage art to make them seem like real paintings.Â
OPTION #2
Have your art printed at a local print shop like staples, Walgreens, Walmart or whatever is local to you.
OPTION #3
Print your art online! There are many online print shops where you can easily upload your image and order in different sizes, finishes and on different kinds of paper. Places like Shutterfly, Mpix, Vista Print, Optimal Print, just to name a few. The rule of thumb is to print the image on the type of paper the original image would have been on.
