How to search for vintage art prints for FREE

There are thousands of free images on the internet that you can legally save and download. They belong to the Public Domain. The public domain refers to all the images that do not have an active copyright protection meaning they are free to use for anyone who wishes. You can download them in several different sized, print them out, and even sell them – all completely legal! The only catch is it can be a little tedious too search for them. There are several websites you can search for these images. These are some of my favourites:

Simply enter the keywords you are looking for, like “Rose Bouquet” or ” Mother with Child” and hit search. Once you found a picture you want, just lick download in your preferred size/resolution.

Searching for the right image across multiple websites can be tedious and time consuming! That’s why I have done the work for you and gathered the best spring images ready for you to download! Scroll to the bottom to find them!

How to download and resize your art

Your art is downloaded, now what? First you have to think about the size you want your art to be. I make sure that I have the frame first that I want to use for my art, this way I know exactly what size I need. Next I resize the image I downloaded. Don’t worry, it’s not as complicated as you think. I do this through an app called Canva. Canva is also called the practical user friendly photoshop. There is a free version and a pro version, however the free version works just fine for resizing! I take these simple steps to resize a photo in Canva:

  • I open the app and create a free account
  • Now click “Create new design”
  • Now select “custom size”
  • Here you want to enter the size you need for your frame. For example “8×10 inches”
  • Now upload the image and adjust the image to the blank page
  • All that’s left to do is to save the image and viola, you just resized your image.

How or where to print your vintage art prints

You have three options when it comes to printing your art.

Option #1

If your art is small enough(8×10, 5×7, 4×6) then print your art at home! If you have a printer at home then this is the easiest option! I would use high quality stock paper or watercolour paper for vintage art to make them seem like real paintings.

Option #2

Have your art printed at a local print shop like staples, Walgreens, Walmart or whatever is local to you.

Option #3

Print your art online! There are many online print shops where you can easily upload your image and order in different sizes, finishes and on different kinds of paper. Places like Shutterfly, Mpix, Vista Print, Optimal Print, just to name a few. The rule of thumb is to print the image on the type of paper the original image would have been on.

How to style vintage art prints

There are so many different art styles and every style has its own beauty and uniqueness however vintage art is my favourite for a few reasons. It has so much beauty and it looks stunning framed. Vintage art can look like high end art with minimal effort and it’s stood the test of time making it timeless art! That being said these are some of my favourite ways to style vintage art:

  • As a gallery wall. Try mixing different frames for an eclectic look or go for the same frames for a more traditional style. This is great for blank wall or a stairway that just needs that certain something!
  • Any shelving, in the kitchen, by the fireplace, in the office, you get the point!
  • As TV art!
  • On a ledge
  • Anywhere that needs some extra styling!

Where to buy vintage art prints

If you don’t want to go through the hassle of searching for art and having them printed I get it. It takes a little bit of time and sometimes it’s easier just to purchase something ready to be hung. Lots of stores offer vintage art but you might end up paying a pretty dollar. If you are looking for a bargain then these are my favourite places I would look for vintage art.

  • Thrift stores is the first and my favourite place to look. I have found stunning pieces for little money and it usually comes with a frame, a win in my book!
  • Flea markets is another great option. It may take some searching and digging, but you can usually find a steal when you do find one!
  • Antique stores might be another good option. Antique stored usually carry a variety of art and beautiful frames as well!
  • Facebook Marketplace has also been successful when it comes to vintage art, it’s worth checking out!
  • Etsy is my favourite shop when I am looking for something specific I can’t seem to find. The digital art on Etsy is usually very inexpensive and saves you time searching.

A few tips

Here are a few tips when it comes to vintage art prints:

  • To make your vintage art look like a real oil painting try brushing on mode Podge. Here you have to make sure you are going with the natural strokes of the painting. Once it dries it will make the picture look totally authentic and real!
  • Check out thrift stores for frames first! Almost all of my frames are thrifted, and I have saved a dollar or two this way.
  • Switch out prints with the seasons. I like to have a few art pieces in the frame and just rotate them fitting to the season.
