Hey friends! In this post I want to cover 8 practical tips how to style a modern organic living room, and show you all the details in our living room design!
There is something about earthy modern organic interiors that are so calming and cozy. This is no surprise since this style focuses on organic, natural elements, bringing the outside in so to speak, which is naturally calming for humans.
When building our home I wasn’t sure how to design and decorate our living room space. I know I wanted a fireplace, neutral colours and clean lines. I love the old world European style, a bit of vintage but also modern, and so I tend to gravitate towards a more transitional style.
I love how our living room turned out and would definitely put in the modern organic section of styles. Here are 8 practical tips that I used to design our living room. Also all the details and links to everything we used!

1. Fireplace
The modern organic style emphasizes clean lines when it comes to fireplaces. Finishes like plaster, drywall, cement or neutral stone are all popular choices.
This is exactly what I wanted, clean lines yet a beautiful statement in the living room.
2. Wall trim
A simple touch like trim on an empty wall can really make all the difference while still keeping it sleek and simple.
When designing these nooks beside our fireplace I wasn’t sure if I should put up wall decor or other accents but just decided to go with a wall trim feature. It was super simple to install and really adds a lot to the space!
3. Colours
The modern organic style is all about organic, earthy and neutral colours! Think warm whites, creams, beiges or earth tones.
I didn’t want to go to dark in this space so we decided to go with the wall colour “Simply White”. This is one of the warmer whites! We added more depth to the space with other accents like the beam, rug and decor.
4. Nooks
Modern organic is all about clean lines and shapes that flow organically!
Adding these nooks to either side of our fireplace adds a lot of coziness, visual interest and character to the space! The kids love cozying up with a book beside the fire during the colder months.
We also love our customized cushions that fit our benches perfectly! They also have a non slip bottom which I so appreciate. You can find them here!
5. Rug
A rug really grounds a space! When deciding for a rug for your living room consider a few things. Think about your main colours, if your furniture is pretty neutral and light then go for something a little more dark. If your furniture is dark then pick something contrasting! Go for neutral, earthy colours that will compliment the space.
Since our living room is very bright and light we decided to go for a rug that has more depth and boldness. It is the perfect match to the space!
6. Seating
Neutral colours and organic materials like leather, wool, cotton or linen are all prefect choices when decorating a organic modern space.
We love our sectional, and especially loving that the cushion covers are completely washable!
7. Textiles
Adding throw pillows and cushions to a space is always a good idea! Go for textured organic materials like wool, cotton, leather, suede or linen. This will add to the modern organic style and reflect quality.
8. Decor
Modern organic decor usually includes materials like stone, bamboo, rattan with neutral colours and earthy colours.
When choosing decor I went with what I love, which is a bit of everything. I love vintage prints, brass accents and organic materials.
